Head of School Search

March 12, 2021
Dear VMS Community,
Following Mike Imperi’s announcement that the 2021-2022 school year would be his final year at VMS, we now look toward conducting our search for the next Head of School. The school is pleased to announce the VMS Search Committee. This committee of volunteers consists of current Trustees who represent parents of current students in all divisions, parents of alumni, and previous faculty. We are committed to working closely with VMS community members who want to be a part of the search process.
Additionally, we are happy to introduce our search firm, Educators’ Collaborative, and welcome our Search Consultants, Evan Peterson, Mary Seppala, and Pilar Cabeza de Vaca to the VMS community. This is a partnership that begins now and will continue through the new candidate’s first year. These three professionals represent the placement of many Heads of School and are committed to getting to know everything about VMS over the next few months.
We are conducting an "open” search, meaning that our community will be involved early in the search process and that all constituent groups closely linked with VMS will have a chance to share their visions for the next Head of School. The first opportunity for your engagement in our search process will be in the form of a survey. This will help Evan, Mary and Pilar get to know our community and start to understand who we are. This survey will go out shortly to all community members, and will also provide open comment boxes for your thoughts.
The second opportunity for your engagement in our search process will be the "Discovery Visit.” Evan and Mary will travel to campus in the near future for a two-day marathon of meet and greets with every constituent in the community interested in participating. Both in-person and zoom meetings for faculty, staff, alumni, and parents will be held. Everyone will have access to the Search Consultants during this on-campus visit.
We recognize that changing the Head of School is a significant transition, and it’s not uncommon to feel moments of hesitation or doubt along the way. Please know that this collaborative process between our search firm and all of our stakeholders will incorporate everyone’s voice and that it provides VMS with the best possible path for a highly successful transition. We look forward to hearing your thoughts in the survey and learning a lot more about VMS in the coming year. Above all, we value your input and appreciate your support as VMS embarks upon the next chapter in its leadership of the school.
When you hear from us next, we will have the survey to you, and a timeframe for the Discovery Visit.
The VMS Search Committee
