Student Wellness
At Vail Mountain School, we believe that a student’s success is rooted not just in academic achievement, but in emotional balance, physical well-being, and a strong sense of self. Our whole-child approach prioritizes student wellness at every stage of development. Through intentional programming, meaningful relationships, and expert support, we help students build the confidence, resilience, and self-awareness they need to thrive—both in and out of the classroom.
Lower School: Foundations of Self-Regulation and Emotional Literacy
In Lower School, students begin learning how to identify and manage their emotions, setting the stage for a lifetime of healthy social-emotional development.
Through the FocusedKids program, Ms. Elliott teaches students about key parts of the brain and how they influence our feelings and reactions. With breathing exercises, movement, and mindfulness strategies, students gain tools to calm their bodies and regulate emotions. These practices lead to stronger focus, increased self-awareness, and greater classroom readiness.
Middle School: Building Healthy Habits and Self-Knowledge
Middle School students explore wellness through their Seminar course, which covers age-appropriate topics related to physical health, emotional well-being, and personal identity.
Lessons emphasize healthy routines, self-care, and understanding one’s body and mind. A complementary PE elective reinforces lifelong wellness habits—such as fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness—that empower students to care for themselves with intention and awareness.
Upper School: Identity, Purpose, and Belonging
In the Upper School, students take increasing ownership of their well-being. We intentionally weave wellness into the rhythm of each week through gatherings, advisory, and curriculum.
Our approach centers on three core needs:
Connection – Meaningful relationships help students feel seen and supported.
Self-Discovery – Students explore who they are and who they are becoming.
Belonging – We nurture a culture where every student feels valued and part of something larger.
Our Homebase advisory meets three times weekly, offering space for conversation, planning, and guidance on everything from current events and technology to global ethics and personal growth.
Whole-School Wellness Support
From the earliest years through graduation, VMS supports student wellness with robust programming for students, parents, and faculty. Our Psychological Support Services team, led by Dr. Kate Drescher and Ms. Susan Elliott, offers guidance on everything from emotional regulation to mental health and peer relationships.
Students also benefit from the calming presence of Beignet, our beloved facility dog. Trained through Canine Companions and certified with Assistance Dogs International, Beignet is an intuitive, gentle companion who brings joy and comfort to our halls.
Healthy Dining & On-Campus Care
We know that healthy bodies support healthy minds. That’s why we partner with Sage Dining to offer meals made from scratch with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Sage's flexible menus accommodate a variety of dietary needs while reinforcing balanced eating habits that last a lifetime.
On campus, students are cared for by a school nurse four days a week, ensuring health needs are met with compassion and professionalism. Officer Kullman, our dedicated School Resource Officer, is a daily presence—fostering a sense of safety and connection with the broader community.
