Upper school students have the opportunity to participate in international summer programs through Students Shoulder to Shoulder (SStS), which is housed on campus in the homesteader cabin and closely tied to VMS. SStS’s mission is to inspire students to engage in responsible global citizenship through full immersion service programs, online study, and public presentation with the goal of providing a catalyst to connect the moral imagination of youth to the global community that is imminently theirs.
Vail Mountain School is the founding member of Shoulder to Shoulder’s Global Schools Coalition. Each summer, our students, along with those from other Coalition schools, may participate in courses held in locations around the globe to learn about cultures other than their own while performing service work. SStS offers programs in Bolivia, Cambodia, Kenya, Nepal, New Orleans, Nicaragua, Peru, Pine Ridge, and Tibet.
