VMS Summer Camps 2020

Vail Mountain School offers summer learning opportunities for students in grades K-12 designed to inspire inquiry, spark imagination, and keep young minds engaged during the summer break. Our program is fueled by the same rapport-driven approach that is at the core of both our mission and our community. All courses use Vail Mountain School as a base. SUPER FUN SCIENCE STEM CAMP

Session I: June 15th - 18th; 9am-3pm
Session II: June 22nd -25th; 9am-3pm
Session III: July 6th - 9th; 9am - 3pm
Ages: Rising 3rd - 6th graders

Campers will participate in STEM activities that may include making bottle rockets, cubelets building and races, making giant bubble blowers, oobleck, sugar crystals, makey makey games, an egg drop challenge, make your own ice cream, pizza box solar ovens, outdoor play and arts and crafts as well. Come join in the fun!

CAMP MAGIC MOUNTAIN

Session I: June 22nd - 26th; 9am-3pm

Camp Magic Mountain is a day camp where children will explore outside, create with arts and crafts, and review essential language arts and math skills. Children will be active, connect with nature, have time for structured and unstructured play, work on social skills and become more independent, and will make new friends. First grade teacher, Kara Robinson, will lead campers each day and provide a fun and engaging environment. 

EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING BOOT CAMP 

June 27th and 28th; 12:00pm-5:00pm

This two day workshop promotes executive functioning skills such as self-management, organization, motivation and overall independence. Positive, healthy academic development includes:
  • Management of time, materials, and information
  • Active reading and listening
  • Concrete study strategies
  • Metacognition and reflection
  • Physical exercise, mindfulness, sleep and nutrition
  • Goal setting and self-advocacy

WEAR YOUR ART

July 7th and 8th; 9am-3pm
Ages: Rising 2nd-6th Graders

In this two day art camp, participants will participate in printmaking, fabric dyeing, and beading to create unique wearable art and accessories. Time will be spent indoors and outdoors each day.  

RAINBOWS, UNICORNS and NARWHALS, OH MY!

July 14th - 16th; 9am-3pm
Ages: Rising 1st-6th Graders

In this three day art camp, participants will experiment with clay, yarn, and other materials to create artwork inspired by rainbows, unicorns, and narwhals. Time will be spent indoors and outdoors each day. 

"MINOR" MINERS 

Session I: July 13th - 15th; 9:00am-3:30pm 
Session II: July 20th - 22nd; 9:00am-3:30pm

“Minor” miners will experience Colorado history and science through daily tours of local gold and silver mines. The camps will begin each day with lessons on mining techniques, chemistry of metals and alloys, geology and ores, and a look back at the history of each mine. Then students will travel to a mine, take a tour, and engage in a mining activity, including panning for gold, at or near each site. Due to the dark and tight spaces that may be encountered during the tours, this camp is not recommended for children who may react negatively to this environment.

FAIRY GARDENS & GNOME HOMES

July 21st and 22nd; 9am-3pm
Ages: Rising 1st-6th Graders

Does your child have a green thumb? In this two art day camp, participants will create their own miniature fairy garden/gnome home complete with structures and living plants that will be theirs to keep! New techniques will be taught that are different from last summer. Time will be spent indoors and outdoors each day. 

XL ART

July 28th and 29th; 9am-3pm
Ages: Rising 2nd-6th Graders

Can you create a pencil sized for a giant??? In this two day art camp, participants will create large scale artwork while exploring new mediums and techniques. Time will be spent indoors and outdoors each day. 

THEATRE CAMP - Visionbox - Realism

July 13th - 24th (Mondays - Fridays); 9:00am- 4:00pm
Ages: Incoming 9th - 12th graders
Instructor: Visionbox Theatre Company
Cost: $2000 per session
 
Visionbox is a new theatre training program and production company, led by Founding Artistic Director, Jennifer McCray Rincon. This new program, in residence at the Vail Mountain School, will provide high school and college age students with professional level theatre training and contemporary production experience
 
Up to 16 students will be admitted to train in skills classes that include movement, singing, projection design, and acting. The material studied in acting classes will focus on American Classical Realism including writing by Tennessee Williams, Clifford Odets, Lillian Helman, Arthur Miller, and finally Chekov. Scenes selected in classes will then be rehearsed by students with the Visionbox Ensemble professional actors and a project will be developed to perform for audiences at the end of the intensive. The project will take ideas and content from class work while developing a contemporary piece that will include actors, text, and innovative projection design.

THEATRE CAMP - Visionbox - Shakespeare

July 27th - August 7th (Mondays - Fridays); 9:00am- 4:00pm
Ages: Incoming 9th - 12th graders

Up to 16 students will be admitted to train in skills classes that include acting music, movement, projection design, voice and speech, and stage combat. The material studied in the acting classes will focus on Shakespearean scansion, acting poetry, imaging, text analysis, and character. Each student will then have the opportunity to develop their own solo Shakespeare piece in collaboration with other actors with support from our design, technical, and directing team. Actors from the Visionbox Ensemble will also continue to develop their own solo pieces that will be presented in a festival with students at the end of the intensive. Visionbox Studio premiered some of these pieces last summer with All The World: A Festival of Solo Shakespeare Performances.
