VMS Summer Camps

Vail Mountain School offers summer learning opportunities for students in grades K-12 designed to inspire inquiry, spark imagination, and keep young minds engaged during the summer break. Our program is fueled by the same rapport-driven approach that is at the core of both our mission and our community. All courses use Vail Mountain School as a base. Camps are open to the public and offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Please contact frontdesk@vms.edu with any questions. 
 

Middle School Boys Basketball Camp

June 11-13; 8am-3pm
Ages: Rising 7th-9th Grade Boys 
Coaches: Chris Hoevel; Michael Hecht

This camp is focused on building basketball skills in middle school students and supporting the development of basketball culture at VMS. In the morning, players will work on fundamentals, as well as offensive and defensive strategies used in both middle and high school play. In the afternoon, they will compete in individual, skill-based competitions and play 4 on 4 mixed-grade level games that will provide opportunities to practice the fundamentals and strategies that they learned during morning practice. This camp is led by VMS upper school basketball coaches, Chris Hoevel and Michael Hecht.

VMS Dance 2018!

June 4-7; 9am-3pm

Dance 2018! Is a dance intensive for dancers age 8 and up. Explore hip hop, musical theater, contemporary, improv, leaps & turns, ballet and more! The camp also includes exploration into dance culture and history through film and project based learning. A Dance 2018! Showcase will take place on the final day to share what dancers have learned. Camp is intended for dancers with previous experience; groups will be defined based on levels and interest on the first morning of camp.

“Camping” with Dinosaurs

June 25-28; 9am-3:30pm
Ages: Rising 1st & 2nd graders

Does your child love to play, explore and learn? We will learn about dinosaurs all while incorporating math, reading, and language arts skills. This camp is for rising 1st and 2nd graders and will be tailored to fit their learning needs. We will spend time in the classroom for focused learning and unstructured imaginary play, time outside for discovery and group games and even time on the VMS indoor rock climbing wall!

"Minor" Miners

July 9-11; 9am-3:30pm 

Ages: Rising 3rd-6th graders

“Minor” miners will experience Colorado history and science through daily tours of local gold and silver mines. The camps will begin each day with lessons on mining techniques, chemistry of metals and alloys, geology and ores and a look back at the history of each mine. Then students will travel to a mine, tour the mine and engage in a mining activity, including panning for gold, at or near each site. Due to the dark and tight spaces that may be encountered during the tours, this camp is not recommended for children who may react negatively to this environment.
 

Camp Magic Mountain

Session I: July 9-13; 9am-3pm

This is a day camp for math and language arts that explores and discovers the outdoors. Children will enrich their math, reading and writing skills, make crafts, and explore outside.

High Ridge Hiking

July 16-18; 8:30am-3pm
Ages: Rising 3rd-6th graders
Faculty: Steph Lewis- Middle School Science Teacher, Ross Sappenfield- VMS Science Department Chair

Young hikers will explore life at its upper limits on the absolute highest ridges and peaks in Colorado. High-mountain passes, and a 14er accessible by van, will be the outdoor lab as participants create a photo journal of the toughest plants and animals in the world. Learn about the challenges of surviving in the alpine environment and plan a “hunting list” for the day, and then travel by van to a high ridge or peak where students will identify, classify and document the amazing plants and animals we encounter through photography. Campers must be considered good hikers and should feel comfortable above treeline to enroll in this camp.

Tinker Time

Session I: July 16-19; 9am-3:30pm

Ages: Rising 1st & 2nd graders

Does your child love to experiment, ask questions, explore and learn? We will explore the group’s interests to experiment, design, and ask questions. Children will work in groups to complete project based learning and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) fun! The camp is for rising 1st and 2nd graders who are interested in science, math, art and much more. We will spend time in the classroom, time outside for discovery and group games and even time on the indoor VMS rock climbing wall.

Fashion Lab @ VMS

July 16-20; 9am-3pm
$300 early bird; $325 after May 1
Ages: Rising 6th-12th Graders
Faculty: Sam Mizwicki- VMS Art Department

Get out your glue guns and join Ms. Miz to learn about fashion design by experimenting and creating wearable masterpieces. Participants will be challenged with constructing accessories and an outfit using unconventional materials. Some time will also be spent outdoors each day. On Friday, these unique fashions will be presented to friends and family at an end of the week Fashion Show.

Art Scouts @ VMS

July 23-27; 9am-3pm
Ages: Rising 4th-6th Graders

S’mores anyone? Join Ms. Miz for a week of artistic fun! Art Scouts is a fusion of art camp and a traditional summer camp. Time will be spent creating inside the art studio and outdoors with other exciting activities. Participants will produce multiple projects using various media over the course of the week. You will love this amazing art adventure!

Ready, Set...Kindergarten!

July 30-August 2; 9am-3:30pm
Ages: Rising Kindergarteners

This camp will introduce numbers, letters, and much more through hands-on and multisensory lessons. Children will be introduced to basic learning skills to provide a successful transition to any kindergarten classroom. We will spend time in the classroom for learning & play, time outside for discovery, unstructured playtime and group games!
