Glow in the Dark GMOs

December 9, 2014- Tenth graders in the upper school Biochemistry class recently experimented with genetic modification. Under the guidance of Mr. Sappenfield, students altered the genome of a non-pathological strain of E. Coli forcing it to uptake a circular strand of DNA called a plasmid that was engineered to contain a glow gene from a jellyfish. The result, bacteria that glowed in the presence of UV light.
