VMS Starts Fellowship Program

SCHOOL NEWS
September 16, 2014- VMS is proud to announce the launch of a formal fellowship program and the addition of the first fellows to our community. Please join us in welcoming Lindsey Evans and Derek Veilleux.

Lindsey is a graduate of Western Washington University where she received a BA in Community Recreation. She recently completed work with AmeriCorps in Thomaston, Maine and brings a global perspective which is the result of extensive travel throughout Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. Lindsey is also a certified Wilderness First Responder and has experience leading expeditions, youth programming and mentoring. At VMS, she will primarily work with lower and middle school students in mathematics and humanities as well as tutoring, assisting after school care, and helping with student support services.

Derek Veilleux holds a BFA in Sculpture and Education from Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire. He also recently completed work with AmeriCorps in Maine, but at the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences. He has studied abroad in Florence, Italy and brings a wealth of outdoor and athletics experience having worked as a ski patroller, snowboard coach, and soccer coach. Derek will teach Digital Arts and Yearbook. In addition, he will assist with student support services, tutoring, after school care, and other areas.

The VMS Fellowship was conceived and built by the three division directors over the summer break. The program provides fellows with hands-on experience, training, and mentoring to acquire additional skills that will broadly prepare them for careers in K-12 independent school education. VMS Fellows are assigned a mentor teacher with whom he or she will work as a discipline-specific assistant (e.g. mathematics or art).

The program is a terrific opportunity for VMS to serve as resource for bright, aspiring teachers to gain classroom experience and in return, further enrich the resources available to our students. Fellows will spend the school year at VMS and receive a stipend, housing, and ski pass. Derek and Lindsey come to VMS as a result of a nationwide search that yielded nearly 60 applicants.
