5th Grade Hut Trip

VMS School News
April 22, 2014- While middle and upper school students traversed the country and traveled across national borders, our eldest, lower school students embarked on their first hut trip, summiting nearby Vail Pass. The fifth graders traveled 2.7 miles on snow-covered trails to the Shrine Mountain Inn, where they stayed at Walter's, Jay's, and Chuck's cabins. Since this was fifth graders first hut trip, the focus was on packing appropriately for a backcountry trip, trail etiquette, learning how to use skins on their skis, preparing meals, and teamwork.

They also had some special guests. Upper school students, Annie Blakslee and Dylan Cunningham, joined the fifth graders as mentors/leaders in training. Head of School, Mike Imperi and Business Manager, Mark Fenstermacher also made a guest appearance on the trip to the top.

The fifth grade hut trip is the first of eight opportunities they will have as VMS students to take advantage of the 10th Mountain Division Hut System and learn how to safely explore and enjoy nearby backcountry during winter.
