Girls Soccer Beats Aspen
School News
April 8, 2014- The girls varsity soccer team was able to pull off an exciting 2-1 win against Aspen on Tuesday, April 1 at Bandoni Alumni Field. After a slow start, VMS trailed 1-0 at halftime. The team came out strong in the second half, controlling play, winning the majority of the 50/50 balls and keeping an aggressive opponent in their zone for most of the half. VMS struck within the first 15 minutes of the half with a goal from Sydney Sappenfield. Sappenfield brought the ball down the right side of the field and passed off to teammate Avery Bellis inside the 18. After a scrum in the box, Bellis was able to play the ball toward Sappenfield, who put a shot past the Aspen goalkeeper. The game winner came off the right foot of Taylor Washing. Sappenfield was awarded the assist on the play, which was the result of a well placed corner kick. In spectacular fashion, Washing volleyed the corner out of the air with a shot into the near corner of the net, leaving both teams stunned by the perfection of the play.
