A Legacy Rooted in the Spirit of Vail
From a single classroom in the home of Vail’s founder to a thriving campus for more than 300 students, Vail Mountain School’s story starts with the founding of Vail.
Established in 1962 as Vail Country Day School, our first students learned in Pete Seibert’s living room before the school made its way through makeshift classrooms in the Vail Fire House, the Tivoli Lodge, and even the Lionshead Gondola Building.
Renamed Vail Mountain School in 1973, VMS continued to grow and evolve, graduating its first four students in 1976 and building its first dedicated campus near the confluence of Booth and Gore Creek just a few years later.

Today, our 92,000-square-foot campus, completed in 2005, stands as a testament to generations of vision, resilience, and mountain-town spirit. Anchoring it all is the historic Baldauf Cabin, a preserved 1906 homesteader’s cabin, reminding us daily of the pioneering legacy that shaped our school and our valley.

Educating and elevating humans for good.
Mission
We inspire tomorrow’s ethical leaders by developing character, seeking knowledge, and building a community of lifelong learners from the heart of the Colorado mountains to the world beyond.
